UNDERSTANDING CLEAR BRACES

The most important thing to understand about clear braces is that they are almost invisible and are suitable for an adult who needs orthodontic treatment but doesn’t want a mouth full of metal. There are several types of clear braces as well as tooth-colored braces, and when you have a consultation with our orthodontist you can learn about your best option for the smile you have always wanted.

Virtually Invisible Braces

For most orthodontic problems, Invisalign® clear braces are as effective as traditional metal braces. They provide the least noticeable braces for adults and teenagers. Invisalign® provides clear plastic trays similar to mouth guards that fit perfectly over your teeth. Since your orthodontic program is planned out from beginning to end, you receive a new aligner about every two weeks to keep your teeth moving in the right direction. This type of orthodontic treatment is effective for overbite, underbite, and crossbite as well as crooked and crowded teeth.

Compared to metal braces, there are many advantages to clear aligners starting with no food restrictions. Since you remove the aligner to eat, you can continue to eat whatever you want. With braces that have brackets and wires, you need to be careful to avoid chewing hard foods such as nuts, ice, and raw carrots because they can break a wire or bracket.

In addition, you remove the aligner to clean your teeth. This means you can brush and floss as you always have. With metal braces, keeping them clean is a long process that needs to be done at least twice a day and preferably after every time you eat.

Another advantage is that the aligners need only be worn 21 – 22 hours per day. This means you can take them out if you want to attend a special event and not be bothered removing your aligner to eat.

Advantages of Clear Braces

For teenagers, wearing braces may be an unpleasant and embarrassing experience. Allowing them to choose clear braces can make all the difference in their self-esteem. For adults, wearing braces may seem odd since most orthodontic treatments are completed in the teenage years. However, it is not too late to straighten teeth and correct a misaligned bite. Crooked teeth may lead to other problems such as gum disease because they are more difficult to keep clean. Orthodontics may also shift teeth so there are no gaps between teeth leading to a healthier jawbone.
