One of the most common questions we hear during consultations is, “Do braces hurt?”
The honest answer? Occasionally, yes—but usually not as much as people expect.
Whether you’ve just gotten braces, had an adjustment appointment, or started a new set of clear aligners, some temporary soreness is completely normal. The good news is that there are several simple ways on how to relieve braces pain and make the adjustment process more comfortable.
At Unique Orthodontics, we’ve helped thousands of patients throughout the Central Valley achieve healthier, more confident smiles. Here’s what you should know about braces discomfort and what can help when your teeth feel sore.
Is It Normal for Braces to Hurt?
Absolutely.
In fact, mild soreness often means your treatment is progressing as planned.
According to Orajel, a well-known brand specializing in oral pain relief products for toothaches, gum irritation, and mouth discomfort, the pressure and tenderness patients experience during orthodontic treatment are often signs that teeth are actively moving into their new positions. Orajel also notes that braces, wires, brackets, and aligners can temporarily irritate the gums and soft tissues of the mouth, which may contribute to discomfort during treatment.
While nobody loves having sore teeth, it’s usually a temporary part of creating a straighter smile and healthier bite.
Why Do Braces Cause Pain?
Braces are designed to gently move your teeth into better positions over time. To do that, they apply consistent pressure to your teeth and supporting structures.
According to the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO), the pressure created by braces triggers a natural process that allows teeth to move through the bone and into their ideal positions. This movement can create temporary soreness, especially when treatment first begins or after adjustments.
You may also notice irritation on your lips, cheeks, or gums as your mouth gets used to brackets and wires.
Orajel notes that orthodontic appliances, including braces and clear aligners, can sometimes irritate the soft tissues inside the mouth, leading to sensitive gums, cheeks, or minor mouth sores.
While that discomfort can be annoying, it’s usually a sign that your treatment is doing exactly what it’s supposed to do.
How Long Does Braces Pain Last?
Thankfully, braces discomfort doesn’t last forever.
Most patients notice:
- The most soreness within the first 24–48 hours
- Significant improvement after 3–5 days
- Mild tenderness after adjustments that typically lasts only a few days
The AAO notes that discomfort after getting braces or adjustments is usually temporary and manageable at home.
If your discomfort seems unusually severe or lasts longer than expected, give our team a call.
When Are Braces Most Uncomfortable?
Every patient is different, but we typically see soreness during a few common situations.
When You First Get Braces
The first few days are usually the biggest adjustment period. Your teeth aren’t used to the pressure yet, and your lips and cheeks are adapting to the brackets.
Most patients describe the feeling as pressure or tenderness rather than actual pain.
The AAO explains that mild soreness during the first several days after braces are placed is completely normal and generally improves as the mouth adapts.
When Starting a New Aligner Tray
If you’re in clear aligner treatment, you may notice pressure whenever you switch to a new tray.
Orajel notes that aligner patients often experience short periods of soreness when progressing to a new aligner because each tray continues the tooth-moving process.
What Alleviates Pain from Braces?
If your teeth are feeling tender, here are some of the same tips we often recommend to our patients.
Stick With Softer Foods for a Few Days
When your teeth are sore, chewing crunchy foods can make them feel even more sensitive.
For the first day or two, consider foods like:
Both the AAO and Orajel recommend softer foods following braces placement or adjustments to minimize pressure on sensitive teeth.
Use a Cold Compress
A cold compress applied to the outside of your cheeks can help reduce inflammation and provide temporary relief.
Some patients also find that cold water, smoothies, or popsicles help soothe soreness.
Orajel specifically recommends cold foods and ice packs as a way to help calm irritated tissues and reduce discomfort.
Rinse With Warm Salt Water
If your cheeks or gums feel irritated, a simple saltwater rinse can help.
Mix one teaspoon of salt into a glass of warm water and swish gently for about 30 seconds.
This can help soothe sore tissues and keep your mouth feeling more comfortable.
Use Orthodontic Wax
If a bracket or wire is rubbing against your cheek, orthodontic wax can make a huge difference.
Simply place a small piece of wax over the area causing irritation to create a smooth surface while your mouth heals.
The AAO recommends orthodontic wax as one of the easiest ways to protect soft tissues from rubbing brackets or wires.
Consider Over-the-Counter Pain Relief
For temporary soreness, over-the-counter pain relievers may help when used according to package directions.
Some patients also find relief from topical oral pain-relief gels designed for sore gums and oral tissues.
Orajel highlights topical oral pain-relief products as an option for temporarily relieving discomfort in specific sore areas of the mouth.
